Story

Just a little story, that fits nicely to my blog:

….and then the mouse said to the elephant,

“…but why must you be afraid, for surely you can kill me with just one step?” and the elephant replied,

“I am so large and my pride is so great as I am, I can see for miles and miles and I can smell a tiger when he’s near and as I am so great as great I think I am, but uou little mouse, so small that you are, your greatness I just cannot see. You are nothing like me little mouse and if I’m to look closely I see you scurry about in an underworld that I cannot see and all the miles and miles that I’ve known this world is unknown to me. So you see little mouse, it is what I don’t know that I fear so much and that is what you are to me.” The little mouse nodded his head as he understood what the elephant was talking about and then he said,

“Yes elephant, I too am scared of the unknown that’s why I scurry about from one hiding place to another and I can no way understand the miles and miles of country that you have seen. The depths of this undergrowth and as small as I am is all that I know, but elephant, if I was to tell you all about the things I know then maybe you would have no reason to fear me. So surely should you tell me all that you know I would have no reason to fear you!” The elephant stopped and thought for moment and then he asked the mouse,

“But you are so different, why should I trust what you say? You might want to hurt me.” Then the mouse replied,

“yes but I should fear the same as how can I know that you wont hurt me, as you are different also. So why don’t we agree that we do both fear each other and then learn to trust each other?” The elephant was happy with that and so he said,

“Why sure mouse, would you like to be my friend? And the mouse said,

“Why sure elephant, I’d love to!” and then they told each other all the things they knew about.

Ah well, who hasn’t heard these words before (on television, I mean, hopefully not in real life *g*). Just for your information, here are some little facts. The Miranda warnings were mandated by the 1966 United States Supreme Court decision in the case of Miranda v. Arizona as a means of protecting a criminal suspect’s Fifth Amendment right to avoid coercive self-incrimination.

As stated above, it is a WARNING, this guy should have listened.


Who is bored?!

As often, I watched an episode of Doctor Who on my iphone. The episode featured a far-into-the-future-version of The Weakest Link where the losers didn’t just leave the game, but got evaporated (for the non-SF fans, e·vap·o·rate: To convert or change into a vapor; To disappear; vanish, in this case BOTH). It appeared, the people of the world of the future like this kind of entertainment, where everyone fights for their lifes in Big Brother kind of games.

It makes me think of the ancient Romans (not to be confused with old Romans, those are just those Romans with grey hair, isn’t that right Karo?) and their Colosseum: games for the people. Slaves fighting for their lifes with lions and gladiators and the crowd cheering and laughing. I guess we are not far from this in our everyday television shows. It seems more and more ridiculous schemes are invented to keep the population happy. People dress up as pixies, perform, sing and or dance in front of a jury, fight for the “love” of a multi-miljonair who somehow is still single, or just in general make fools of themselves, in the hope to get a shot at showbiz, but in stead get crushed in front of the TV audience (and in case of the pixies a tank of fuel as well, so it is not all bad ;) ). Less bloody then the Romans, but the crowds cheer and laugh nonetheless.

Yesterday I returned from Berlin with DJ Kuckuck, his first trip to Berlin, and we spend almost 6 hours together in a train. Our little micro-cosmos consisted of a portable DVD player and several Dora-DVDs, a bag with food and drinks and his little backpack with cars. He played with his cars, watched Dora, his favorite show nowadays, but 6 hours is a long time to sit still, so after a while he started to get bored and tried climbing over me, taking my glasses and pulling my hair. As we went to the toilet, he saw and felt with his hands how magical a running tap can be and all was well again. Isn’t (our own) life interesting (enough)?

Gaat na 130 jaar het licht uit?

Nederland overweegt het, Duitsland gaat het doen, Australië deed het. Verbod op de klassieke gloeilamp… Zijn grotere broer, de beeldbuis, verdwijnt geruisloos, verdrongen door de sexy platte schermen. De gloeilamp houdt na 130 jaar moedig stand, maar zijn tijd lijkt gekomen. Over 5 jaar kan de gloeilamp zich scharen bij de LP en  het cassettebandje. Ik stop voor de zekerheid alvast een peertje in de schoenendoos bij de rijksdaalder en mijn vinyl singeltje van Mory Kanté, zodat ik Jesse kan laten zien waar zijn vader mee opgegroeid is.

Geschichte

40 Jahre und 3 Tage her, naja, ihr weisst schon, es ist seit Wochen fast nichts anderes mehr aufs Fernseh, Neil Armstrong (nicht zu verwirren mit Lance ;) ) lauft als erster Mensch auf der Mond und sagt die worte “That’s one small step for man; one giant leap for mankind” (da ist mehr gesagt damals, sehe hier, aber diese Satz war das wichtigste).

Ich nehme an die meisten kennen den name Joeri Aleksejevitsj Gagarin, der erster Mensch im All, ein Sovjet Erfolg, aber auf eine Art werden die “alte” Sovjet Erfolgen einfacher vergessen. Vielleicht auch weil das Sovjet Space Programm geheim war, und nur die Erfolgen nach dem Erfolg veröffentlich würden, aber trostdem….

“Being first” ist der Motor hinter jeder Wettkampf, weisst auch Lance, die Sovjets waren schon “first” bei eine menge Dinge,  der erste Mensch der geschlafen hat im All ist eine schone, oder das Erste Tier das lebend vom All zuruck kamm, die arme Laika schaffte es nicht. Ich liebe Wiki fur so etwas, guck mal hier.

Na gut, ich war einige Wochen her in Berlin (ich war und bin mal öfter in Berlin, und mit guter Grund, wah meine Süsse), und habe da das Mauer-Denkmal an die Bernauerstrasse besucht.  Neben das Denkmal ist eine kleine Kapelle, eine sehr schöne Kapelle, Kapelle der Versöhnung, genau auf den Platz von die gesprengte Versöhnungskirche. Auf den Platz vor die Kapelle war ein kleines Podium gebaut, mit nur ein Stuhl und eine kleine Berg Orangen. Als Zuschauer konnte Mann auf den Stuhl platznehmen, Kopfhörer mit Tekst und Musik, und es würde ein Tanz aufgeführt. Das alles hätte etwas mit die Orangen zu tun, und es würde auch erklärt, meine Inga und Karo hörte genau zu, aber ich habe etwas verpasst und es nicht ganz verstanden. Und war zu stolz oder zu blöd es damals zu fragen. Es hat etwas zu tun mit die geschichte von Ost Berlin, eine geschichte die sonst einfach vergessen wird……  so bitte Inga, erklärs mir nochmal, so das ich es nicht vergessen kan.


Black hole

Ok, my first entry, technically my second if you count the introduction. And who better than my (almost) three year old son to give me inspiration.

Sometimes I feel there is a place for things, or put it differently, a place things just ought to be, like a natural order, like a dent in spacetime, just waiting for the right object to fit in it.

Well my son feels the same: this little wooden part of my kitchen, ought to be right here, in the corner against the wall. And no matter how often I put it back in the black hole it used to fill, it always is placed back here with microscopic precision, in the dent in spacetime, where it, aparently, belongs.

I just wonder what thing belongs in the black hole…..


A blog?

Hi there and welcome to my blog. Why did I start a blog, you might ask? Wel, no idea actually. Hmm, ok, not entirely true, there is at least one reason: because I feel like it, and that is as good a reason as any. I thought about it for weeks, started today and hope to be blogging for long, entertaining more people than just myself.

What will this blog be about? You got me there again, no idea. I had to come up with a title and choose this one: ‘Little things, big things’. A nice one, if I may say so myself, and one that fits almost every idea I have. And ideas I will have plenty, as long as I keep my eyes open for the little things and big things in my life.
